Herb Garden

Today was a productive day, not only did I run a bajillion (that’s right) errands, but I finally made the time to plant my very own herb garden. I’m probably way more excited about this than I should be, but I can’t seem to help myself!

There really is no comparison to the taste and aroma of fresh herbs. In fact, as I was making my purchase at Orchard today, I found the checker helplessly submerging her face into my assortment, not once, not twice, but THREE times, each time inhaling deeply and exhaling with a satisfying "Ahhh."  The sight of this stranger with basil leaves and rosemary sprigs up to her ears made me chuckle, but somehow I couldn’t help but do the same as I was planting.

Ready to get my hands dirty!
Aside from their aroma being completely intoxicating, fresh herbs single handedly give vibrancy and depth to any dish, making each meal seem wonderfully more complicated and accomplished than it actually is. I’ve often wanted to have my own herb garden, but never thought they would grow well on our dim, concrete apartment patio, or as I affectionately call it, The Slab. However, after seeing how well the rest of my potted plants did over the summer, I decided to go ahead and give it a try.

All together I bought 3 sweet basil plants, 3 different kinds of thyme, upright rosemary, gray sage, and chives (which Sally promptly began devouring when I got home), one 13.5” flower pot, and a medium sized bag of moisture control dirt. In no time I had everything planted and watered, and it was all ready to use by dinner time. (I even planted some kitty grass for Sally!)

Sally-kins eyeing those chives!
In total the project took me about 30-45 minutes to complete, and cost $47. This is a little more than I like to spend (I’m always on the lookout for a good bargain), but you could definitely cut costs here if you have an actual yard to plant in, if you grow from seeds, or if you get a previously owned flower pot. Either way, it’s a fun project and a great way to liven up your garden and your meals!
